Juvederm is a product by the company Allergan, whos most famously created Botox. It is a Hyaluronic Acid dermal filler and most will last 9 months to one year. Hyaluronic Gel products are a malleable gel with a smooth consistency. Hyaluronic Acid works by holding water at the injection site, acting as a cushioning agent to create the consistency from being “cross-linked, or bonded together. The tighter the bondage the higher the percentage of HA molecules per mL or cc (cubic centimeter) of water, the thicker the gel will be. HA is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body. The role of Hyaluronic Acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients and help the skin retain its natural moisture and softness.

The Juvederm products are used in non-surgical procedures to correct and fill facial wrinkles and folds. It is commonly used in the nasolabial folds or smile lines, cheeks, under-eyes, and lips. The goal is to add temporary volume, and to smooth out the skin. Juvéderm is one of the most common nonsurgical procedures done in the United States. It was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003, and more than 2.4 million procedures using hyaluronic acid as the base, including Juvéderm were performed in 2016 alone.

All fillers, including Juvéderm must be performed by a medical licensed professional. This Non-Surgical procedure are performed by Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons, and Medical Spa’s with trained injectors.

There are a few different types of fillers falling under the Juvéderm category:

  • Juvéderm XC Ultra
  • Juvéderm XC Ultra Plus
  • Volbella
  • Vollure
  • Voluma

All have a slight different make up to achieve specific results. For instance, Juvéderm Ultra would not be used in the tear troughs (under the eye) because the consistency is too thick, and better at creating volume and contour. The alternative would be either Volbella or Vollure, which are thinner gel consistencies, to accurately address the hollowness under the eye. Juvéderm Ultra, and Ultra Plus are used most frequently to fill the lips. It creates a smooth, subtle volume for people lacking that or shape or to even out any imperfections.

Voluma is a commonly used Juvéderm filler to fill in the cheeks, and restore lost volume. It was approved by the FDA in December 2013. Voluma works to temporarily restore the effects of aging and provide a younger, tighter appearance where applied and even gives the face a sculpted appearance. Juvéderm Voluma XC injectable gel is a smooth, colorless hyaluronic acid (HA) gel that contains a small quantity of local anesthetic (lidocaine).

The addition of lidocaine helps to improve the comfort of the injection. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is manufactured using technology to give a specialized smooth-gel filler that produces long-lasting results at the treatment site. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is delivered by an injection into the cheek and surrounding area of the mid-face to correct volume and fullness, because of the molecular traits it is able to last longer than regular Juvéderm and be injected a little deeper. This also gives the filler a longer lasting effect, up to 18 months vs 6-12 months.

Knowing the subtle differenced between the Juvéderm products will help you as a patient understand what the provider will decide to determine which filler will fit your individual needs. In most cases, a combo of them will achieve the best outcome, and longest-lasting results.
